Cushman & Wakefield, which manages the Aveiro Center shopping mall, announced a notable achievement in its environmental sustainability initiative. Between July 2023 and June 2024, the shopping centre achieved a 45% reduction in energy consumption from the electrical grid, achieved through the implementation of solar panels on the building’s roof.
In the first 12 months after installation, the energy generated by Aveiro Center’s solar panels not only supplied almost half of the centre’s energy consumption but also prevented the emission of 103.79 tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This milestone is a testament to Aveiro Center’s commitment to responsible operational practices and its active contribution to combating climate change.
Additionally, Aveiro Center management is committed to facilitating a transition to greener mobility. Since 2021, the centre already has two semi-rapid electric vehicle chargers and aims to expand this offering with another 14 ultra-rapid charging points planned, making it one of the largest charging hubs of this kind in Portugal. The expectation is that these new points will be operational at the beginning of 2025, reinforcing the centre’s commitment towards sustainable innovations.
“Our strategy for implementing renewable energy solutions has shown tangible results not only in reducing operational costs but more importantly in our environmental impact,” said Pedro Leal, director of the shopping centre. “We are excited to lead by example within the community and contribute towards a more sustainable future.”
On his part, André Navarro, Partner and Head of Retail Asset Services at Cushman & Wakefield, comments that “Aveiro Center will continue to invest in green technologies and adopt measures to improve energy efficiency and further reduce its carbon footprint. The centre’s management is committed to maintaining sustainable practices that benefit both the environment and the local community.”
