Katowice is the capital of the Silesia Voivodeship, as well as the seat and heart of the first metropolitan union in Poland, the Górnosląsko-Zagłębiowska Metropolis (GZM), combining 41 cities and municipalities, inhabited by 2.3 million people. It is ranked 16th among all EU cities in terms of GDP.
Katowice is a city of great transformations that has been going on for several years. Until recently, the City, like the whole region, was associated with heavy industry and mining.
